SSANGYONG LAUNCHES ITS ALL-NEW KORANDO FOR EUROPE AT GENEVA

SsangYong is launching its all-new Korando - the fourth generation to carry the name, and follows on from the SIV-2 design concept first seen at the Geneva motor show in 2016.  It will go on sale across Europe from mid-2019, with an EV based on the e-SIV concept to follow.

Commented Johng-sik Choi, CEO of SsangYong Motor Company www.smotor.com/en  “This new Korando is further proof of the quantum change in direction that SsangYong has embarked on, and exemplifies this through contemporary design, state-of-the-art technology, the latest in safety, and new power options which will soon include electrification.

“This revolution in our product philosophy was first evident in Tivoli, followed by Tivoli XLV, Rexton and then the Musso pick-up, and at each launch the media commented positively on the remarkable step changes the brand was making.

“Now we are going even further, with an all-new product which we believe will compete head-on with anything currently available in the mainstream SUV C-segment, yet will beat them all on value!”

The car sports a new-look throughout which has been designed to maximise its robust character with a distinctive new grille and headlight treatment at the front.

The new Korando SUV is designed for families seeking an active lifestyle, and will appeal to those requiring a car that can handle the rough and tumble of family life, with sector leading interior space for growing children, and generous boot space for all their leisure equipment and daily needs.

The car will go on sale in Korea shortly, with European sales set to commence from mid-2019.

Form and function - contemporary style meets pure practicality
With an all-new and distinctive style externally, the front aspect draws on the new SsangYong-look but with strongly sculptured side lines.

While this highly contemporary look is designed to appeal to a younger customer profile, the extremely practical design will appeal to all ages.

Longer, wider and lower than the car it replaces, the new Korando measures 4,452mm long, 1,870mm wide and 1,620mm high, and with a wheelbase of 2,675mm, one of the longest in its class for increased comfort.  Luggage capacity ranges from 551 litres with all seats in position, up to a huge 1,248 litres with the rear seats folded.

Inside, the spacious interior provides better head-room and rear seat space than its competitors, with a high-tech premium feel interior.  It is also driver-orientated with a range of features such a 9” AVN (audio visual navigation) screen and 10.25” full colour LCD cluster dual navigation to provide all the information needed, and four-way adjustable seat with lumber support for comfort.  Meanwhile passengers also benefit from features such as colour changeable ambient lighting, and doors that are designed to cover the sills along the lower part of the body to ensure they don’t pick up dirt from the side of the car when getting in and out.

High levels of safety

Thanks to a comprehensive suite of passive and active aids including all the latest features technology can provide, and with multiple airbags including a driver’s knee airbag, Korando will be one of the safest cars in its segment.
The advanced driver assistance and safety systems featured on Korando include advanced emergency braking system (AEBS) supplemented with a camera and radar, lane keep assist, vehicle ahead moving alert, safe distance and driver alerts, intelligent and adaptive cruise control and high beam assistance.  It also features blind spot detection, lane keep assist and rear cross traffic alert with automatic brake activation linked to all three if the driver doesn’t apply the brakes first.

Connectivity & technology

With one of the most contemporary interiors, and with its wide and easily accessible dashboard, the new Korando bristles with the very latest in-car technology and connectivity such as Apple CarPlay, Google Android Auto and a Tom Tom sat nav system that appears on the main screen and within the instrument cluster for safe viewing.

The power to deliver

The car will be offered with the option of two Euro 6d engines from launch, an all-new 1.5 litre petrol GDI-turbo engine, and an updated 1.6 litre diesel engine.  An EV is planned to follow in due course.

The new smooth running 1.5 litre petrol GDI-turbo engine displaces 1,497cc, and delivers maximum power of 163PS at 5,500rpm and a maximum torque of 280Nm at 1,500-4,500rpm, with a CO2 of 146g/km.  (Target EU figure for the two wheel drive car with manual transmission).

The highly economical, powerful and clean 1.6 litre diesel engine displaces 1,597cc, delivering a maximum power of 136PS at 4,000rpm and a maximum torque of 324Nm at 1,500rpm for the automatic model, with a CO2 of 115g/km.  (Target EU figure for the two wheel drive car with manual transmission).

The 1.6 litre diesel with automatic will offer an impressive 2-tonne towing capacity, or 1.5-tonne with the other engines and transmissions.  Both engines will be offered with an automatic stop/start feature on two-wheel drive models with 6-speed manual and 6-speed AISIN automatic transmission.

Heritage & value

SsangYong has been designing and manufacturing SUVs and 4x4 vehicles for 65 years, and this fourth generation Korando benefits significantly from that deep experience.

Embarking on a new and much more contemporary design language first seen with the Tivoli in 2015, Korando embraces this new design look making it fit for the modern day, while drawing heavily on the brand’s experience of making well engineered, robust and reliable vehicles.

As befits the brand experience, it is also comprehensively equipped with items that most other brands charge as extras.  It will offer unparalleled value when launched, and covered by an industry leading 7-year/150,000mile warranty for customer reassurance.

SSangyong - Ssurprisingly Good

We think our range is so good that all SsangYong vehicles are covered by a 5-year limitless mileage warranty. Surprised? Don't just take our word for it... here's what the press had to say about our range of vehicles - you will find the front page detailing our recently launched new Rexton, with reviews of our other equally capable models overleaf.

Steve Cropley, Autocar, 11.10.2017 - new Rexton

It's an entirely fresh design inside and out... the interior is especially spacious and well designed. This is no low-roofed crossover, but an SUV that carries its occupants proudly high. The Rexton's interior is both plush and very well equipped; it has all the info screens, connectivity and electronic driving aids an SUV buyer could want...
There's a beguiling effortlessness about the big SsangYong's progress on the highway, because engine, wind and road noise are all very well contained. It looks modern, the cabin is roomy, durable and plush and the quality is the classiest bit of all. Pretty good in mud and effortless on the motorway. What's not to like?

Horse & Hound, 'Top Towing Vehicles', 26.10.2017

This seven-seater vehicle differs from many of its counterparts with its body-on-frame construction, which creates an extremely strong and durable vehicle. Affordable, well equipped and capable.

The Scotsman, 29.09.2017 - new Rexton

Having recently driven the Shogun, the Rexton has it beaten. It's quieter, smoother, more responsive, and with a better looking, better quality interior. Even at motorway speeds the interior remains a hushed and pleasing place to be.
If this latest Rexton is anything to go by there could be big things to come from the two dragons in the future.

Auto Express, 18.10.2017 - new Rexton

The Rexton's party piece is its 820-litre boot. Off road, the Rexton is very competent.
...there's plenty of grip and the steering is pleasingly responsive and weighty. Another highlight of the new car is its ability to tow. It'll haul up to 3.5 tonnes with little difficulty.

Honest John, 11.10.2017 - new Rexton

With an upmarket cabin, hugely spacious interior, 3500kg tow weight and genuine off-road capability, the SsangYong Rexton has a lot going for it. The second row of seats is very spacious, with space for three adults to sit with plenty of leg and headroom. The boot, too, is huge at 820 litres, or almost 2000 litres with the rear seats folded. If you're planning on towing horseboxes or caravans across fields, the Rexton will do the job without breaking a sweat.

Caravan and Motorhome Club, Towcar of the Year 2018 Under £24,000 category winner - Korando SE

One judge was taken aback by the SsangYong's 'awesome' stability at high speeds, while another commented on its ability to make precise high-speed lane changes.
Happiness is an easy-to-use hitch, socket and cable anchor, and the Korando scored full marks in this respect. The parking brake's performance at holding the caravan on a 17% incline was flawless.
The SsangYong's gearbox, featuring an incredibly wide third gear, makes for a relaxed towing experience. A terrific performer.

Auto Express. 10.11.2016 - Tivoli

The Tivoli offers good value, but it's a very capable car that stands up to comparison with the class leaders.
Tivoli interior is an even greater revelation than the outside. The design can stand its ground next to mainstream players with a smart seven-inch central screen. The screen itself is surprisingly user-friendly and slick; in fact we'd go as far as saying it's a better system than the one found in some modern Land Rovers.

Top Gear, 22.08.2016 - Tivoli XLV

..that grille/headlight design is pretty stylish.
On the road, it's actually nicely responsive, especially with the six-speed manual ‘box. And, if you head out onto the motorway, you'll find that it's keen, doesn't struggle and doesn't suffer from excessive road or tyre noise.

The Sunday Times ‘Five tough-as-nails pick-ups tested', 01.06.2017 - Musso

It's priced from £19,615, and even the flagship 2.2 EX automatic tested here is a competitive £23,215, and if those don't raise an eyebrow or two, the way the Musso drives will: it's surprisingly good.
It's cargo area is compact, but despite this the car can carry up to 1,050kg of payload, and is able to tow up to 3,500kg, which matches the best in class.
The star of the show has to be SsangYong's 2.2-litre diesel engine. It's smooth to the ear and eager to perform, with a healthy 195 Ib ft from just 1,400rpm, which makes easy work of overtaking or towing.

The Telegraph, 22.08.2017 - Turismo

The SsangYong Turismo is an enormous car. Its gargantuan exterior dimensions disguise an even more enormous cabin, though, with unparalleled levels of space for middle seat passengers and fairly roomy quarters for everyone else.
Boot space goes from ‘huge' to ‘massive' as soon as you fold down the Turismo's many seats - you'd really need to buy a van if you wanted to carry much more cargo.

Definitive Verdict from the UK's only Sepcialist 4x4 Magazine, 01.03.2018 - Rexton

We were impressed beyond belief with the SsangYong Rexton this year, hence the fact that we awarded it THREE titles. The newcomer from South Korea earned the Best Value award as well as winning the Off-Roaders class - before going on to take the overall title of 4×4 Of The Year 2018.
We were hugely impressed by the Rexton's all-round abilities. It's a great vehicle – and its overwhelming value for money takes the verdict from great to astonishing.
The Rexton combines everything from a great interior to an impressive warranty. It's a practical, comfortable truck that is also good to drive, at a price that knocks the wind out of its opposition. If money were no object, yes you would probably go elsewhere – but SsangYong’s new flagship gets 90% of the way to matching vehicles that cost two, even three times as much. It's very nearly as good as some illustrious rivals, and positively better that others – and nothing gives you as much for your money. Make no mistake, the Rexton is a brilliant new option in the 4×4 market.
